- NDS Launches a Blockchain-Based Food Safety Business
NDS is launching a project that applies blockchain technology to the food safety sector with its experience in the government’s pilot livestock history tracking system based on private blockchains. NDS has studied blockchain based on Hyperledger Fabric and Ethereum and developed solutions to incorporate blockchain into the food safety of Nongshim Group. Starting this year, NDS will introduce cutting-edge techniques to Korea in collaboration with global food tracking solution providers, such as Ambrosus and TE-FOOD. NDS is also operating a pilot project for large domestic retailers.
Information on manufacturing and distribution processes must be transparently monitored and tracked to ensure food safety. Here, blockchain is the key to perfect traceability. NDS developed a prototype for pork, and this year, it also filed a patent on the “blockchain-based livestock product history management system, method, and computer readable storage medium.”
The government’s ongoing pilot project aims to prevent forgery and falsification by sharing history information on livestock products in real time using blockchain and Internet of Things (IoT). NDS, the main contractor, is establishing a blockchain network in connection with the existing history management system, sophisticating the RFID function to control the number of livestock animals, and developing a mobile app. The company is also researching ways to monitor temperature to maintain food freshness with an aim to expand the solution to private blockchains.
NDS CEO Kim Joong-won said, “The blockchain is the most powerful solution for ensuring food safety. NDS will develop a universal solution that applies blockchain to food traceability based on our expertise in providing IT services for Nongshim.”
